Computer Networks Introduction 2

Brief introduction of Advantages and disadvantages of computer networks

Advantages
  • File Sharing:
File sharing is a major advantages of a computer network. It allows file sharing and remote file access. A person sitting at one workstation of a network can easily see the files present on the other workstation, provided he is authorized to do so. It saves the time which is wasted in copying a file from one system to another by using storage devices. Many people can access or update the information stored in a database, making it up-to-date and accurate.
  • Resource Sharing:
This is also a important benefit of a computer network. For example, if four people having their own computer. They will require four modems, four printers , if they want to use the resources at the same time. All four computers can be interconnected , using a network and just one modem and one printer can efficiently provide the same services to all four computers.
  • Increase Storage Capacity:
Stand alone computers might fall short of storage capacity, but many computers are on network , memory of different computer can be used in such case. Also we can design a storage server for storage capacity.
  • Increase Cost efficiency:
Many software are available in the market which are expensive and take time to installation. In computer network software can be installed on a server and can be used by different workstations.

Disadvantages

  • Security Issues:
One of the major drawbacks of computer networks is the security issues involved. If a computer is standalone, physical access becomes necessary for any kind of data theft. If a computer is on network , a hacker can get unauthorized by using different tools.
  • Rapid spread of Computer Viruses:
If any computer system in a network get affected by computer virus, there is possible threat of other systems getting affected too. Spread is too easy because of the inter connectivity of workstations.
  • Expensive Set Up:
The initial set up cost of a network can be high depending on the number of computers to be connected. Costly devices are routers, switches, hubs etc.
  • Dependency on the main file server:
In case the main file server of computer network breaks down, the system becomes useless.
